Before Iziskothane there was Oswenka, born in the dirt and despair of mining hostels of the apartheid era, where migrant workers looked forward to Saturday nights when they would discard their overalls and boots for tailored suits and polished shoes, competing in Oswenka competitions for the title of best-dressed man, and most stylish performer. Today, the tradition is still kept alive by Vusi Kunene, who passes down not only suits, but the pride they represent, to his children.
